About Windows 11

Windows 11 25H2 is the current release of Microsoft's operating system for personal computers, and you can download it only from Microsoft's official software download page. Windows 11 first came out on 5 October 2021 as the successor to Windows 10, on which it is based.

Who Windows 11 is for

The upgrade makes most sense for people whose PC meets Microsoft's hardware requirements and who still run Windows 10. They get a supported system with current security updates, a redesigned Start menu and taskbar, and the apps Microsoft develops today. Buyers of new laptops already have it and only need the download to reinstall or repair the system. IT staff and enthusiasts use the official ISO image to install on several machines, to create a bootable USB stick or to set up a virtual machine. Gamers and creative professionals benefit from updated drivers and hardware support. On the other hand, owners of older computers that fail the compatibility check may be better off staying on a supported Windows version or choosing a different system rather than forcing an installation.

System requirements

Microsoft sets minimum requirements for the processor, memory, storage and security features. For memory, the minimum is 4 GB of RAM. The full list, including supported processors, is on Microsoft's Windows 11 system requirements page; check it before you begin.

How to download and install

  1. Open the official Windows 11 download page.
  2. Choose the Installation Assistant to upgrade this PC, the media creation tool for a USB stick, or the ISO image.
  3. Back up your files before starting.
  4. Run the chosen tool and follow the prompts; the PC will restart several times.

Known issues with current updates are tracked on the Windows release health dashboard.

Is it free?

For eligible PCs running a licensed Windows 10, the upgrade is free. A computer without a valid licence needs one; the download itself does not include it.

Before you upgrade

Make a full backup or at least copy personal folders to an external drive or cloud storage. Update your current system and drivers first, disconnect unnecessary USB devices, and make sure the laptop is plugged in. Write down your Wi-Fi password and the login details of important accounts, just in case.

Safety

Download Windows only from microsoft.com. Modified ISO images from torrent sites and "pre-activated" builds are a serious risk: they may contain malware or disabled security features. After installing, run Windows Update to get the latest patches.

Pros and cons

  • Pro: supported system with regular security updates.
  • Pro: official installation tools for upgrades and clean installs.
  • Con: strict hardware requirements exclude many older PCs.
  • Con: frequent prompts to use a Microsoft account.

Alternatives

Windows 10 and Windows 7 are earlier Microsoft systems, and Kali Linux is a Linux distribution aimed at security testing; all are in the same operating systems category.
